General Information about Getting Things Done for Kentucky's Homeless (GTD4KY):
The 2008-2009 program year for GTD4KY will begin September 2, 2008 and will end on August 31, 2009. We are currently accepting applications and interviewing potential members.
AmeriCorps members with GTD4KY for the 2008-2009 program year will serve in one of the following positions:
AmeriCorps Housing Counselors (HC) help homeless and low-income families and individuals find safe, decent and affordable housing. They assist with placements in emergency, transitional and permanent living situations and address homeownership challenges by offering credit counseling and house maintenance training. Additionally, our Housing Counselors develop partnerships and networks with community agencies and provide valuable resources for their clients. AmeriCorps Housing Counselors also serve to address homelessness prevention by helping to keep people in stable housing. They insure timely rental payments, address issues of maintenance and unit upkeep, mediate community or neighbor disputes, and insure that residents have ongoing access to appropriate supportive services.
AmeriCorps Construction Assistants (CA) assist in the construction and rehabilitation of safe, decent and affordable housing for homeless and low-income families and individuals. They serve as part of a construction team, often working alongside the future homeowners. They build houses, repair and weatherize existing homes, lead volunteer construction crews, and train homeowners who are fulfilling “sweat equity” requirements.
AmeriCorps members selected for the 2008-2009 program year will receive a living allowance of $950 per month, basic health care insurance, and child care if eligible. Upon successful completion of the AmeriCorps term, members will also receive an education award of $4,725 that can be used toward future education or to pay off existing qualified educational loans.
Basic Requirements: Applicants must have a desire and commitment to work with low-income or homeless families and individuals and possess the willingness to learn about housing issues in their communities. We are looking for team players who will commit to a year of service and who are able to work with a diverse group of people. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED, or be willing to work toward their GED during their service year. Applicants must be U.S. Citizens.
Our AmeriCorps program is unique in that members are placed in community agencies all through out the state of Kentucky. The chart below depicts where we are looking for members to serve. It also shows the status of the position and has a link, if available, to the organization's website.
